Over the past
few years there have been a natural wave that swept the nation with quite a
number of persons deciding to ‘transition’ and start their natural hair ‘journey’.
There has even been a noticeable decline in relaxer sales. According to
Mintel, marketing research firm, “Relaxers
represent 21% of the black hair-care market with expenditures at $152 million,
down 15% since 2011 due to the natural hair trend.”
Hair has
always been a representation of Black culture, so when Chris Rock documentary
on Good Hair, came out in 2009, it highlighted the business of black
hair, the damaging properties of chemical relaxers and weaves, as well as
creating an awareness for this generation of women to own their own beauty,
wearing my natural hair without fear.
The (NHM) Natural Hair Movement has seen support
even from celebrities who, have no issue with rolling out their natural looks
on the red carpet and on screen. Stars like Tracee Ellis Ross (a diva who has
been doing it all her life), the exceptionally beautiful Lupita Nyong’o, Solange
Knowles just to name a few.
